One of the hardest things about having kids, especially a baby, is finding time for date night with my husband. I’m a little weird with leaving the baby with anyone other than family, and I can only ask my family to watch the kiddos so often. So my husband and I have to come up with fun date night ideas that we can do at home. And when I say fun, not just dinner and a movie or playing one of the best board games for adults. We’ve been using this date night deck to help us theme our date nights, but we still have to plan fun activities to do! This week I decided to do a date night version of the classic Scattergories game. It was so fun to have a little friendly competition even if it was just by ourselves! Almost as fun as our crazy game of New Year’s Eve scattergories! And the winner? The winner chose dessert so naturally I chose this easy strawberry poke cake.

So there are a few different ways you can do this. The basic idea of Scattergories, if you’ve never played, is that you have to come up with words that start with a particular letter that match a topic. To play, you’ll need:
One Scattergories printable per person (get it at the bottom of this post) One pen per person Letter dice (can use the regular Scattergories die) or some way to generate a random letter. If you have kids that have alphabet magnets or letters, you can totally put those in a cup and use them as well. Or just write out the letters and pick one out from a cup. Or use random.org. 2 minute timer – I recommend a sand timer so people can see when the time is going down but you could just set it on someone’s watch or phone as well
How to Play Date Night Scattergories
You’ll play date night Scattergories just like a regular game of Scattergories except you won’t be switching out your category lists each round – just the letter. If you’ve never played Scattergories before, here’s how you play this game!
1 – Give everyone a Scattergories printable and pen.
If you want to play with friends virtually, just make sure that they have a copy to print at home. You could totally do this as a fun group date night along with this virtual scavenger hunt. Make sure everyone has a working pen and printable before you start. There’s a timer so if your pen doesn’t work and the timer starts, you could be in trouble!
2 – Roll a letter for the first round.
Roll or choose a letter for the first round. As soon as the letter is rolled, flipped the timer and everyone starts. To play, everyone must write down something that matches the category that starts with that letter. So for instance, if the category is romantic city and you rolled P, you might put down Paris. You can make up your own rules and level of flexibility on answers for things like if “the” counts and if you can use last names versus first names, etc. Or just be kind, the goal is to have fun after all!
3 – Go through your answers.
Once the time runs out, have someone read through their answers. If their answer for a particular category matches someone else, everyone who matches has to cross it out. Any answers not crossed out after you’ve gone through all of your answers scores one point. Total all of the points for that round at the bottom of the Scattergories printable sheet.
4 – Repeat with other letters.
Roll another letter and do another round trying to come up with answers that match that letter. Keep going until you’ve gone through all of the categories! Most points total at the end of the game wins.
